Meet Your Photographer - Matt Jacques
Focus
As a photographer, I believe in the power of visual storytelling to create impactful, layered images that form a narrative on their own or in a series. This is something I aspire to with all of my work, whether I'm on assignment or exploring personal projects.
Community and conservation also figure large in my photography. As we learn more about how large-scale industrial activities and social forces affect the world we live in, I've been lucky to witness how the solutions to some of our planet's biggest challenges can arise from local, grassroots initiatives.
I hope that my photography reveals some of the inspiring people and organisations that are working every day to help make our collective future brighter, as well as the wild places and species that make this home of ours worth protecting.
Biography
I am a proud member of the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC), with formal accreditations in photojournalism and sports photography. While I'm a dedicated generalist at heart, and have worked with clients across a broad range of industries, much of my recent work has focused on wilderness and wildlife conservation.
I learned early on that in order to get my images out into the world, it's beneficial to be able to write as well. Over the past ten years of working as a professional photographer, I've been fortunate to have my images and words published in the Halifax Chronicle Herald, Montecristo Magazine, and The Narwhal among others.
Over the years, I've expanded my story-telling through both video and audio formats. As the show's host, I was particularly proud that the Battlefords Untapped podcast won a 2021 award from Rivers West District for Sport, Culture and Recreation. In 2023, I launched a new podcast called "The Good, The Bad and The Ai", exploring the incredible opportunities and challenges this technology poses for photographers and society at large.
Education is another passion of mine, and over the years I've been a regular contributor to the excellent Shutter Muse site, run by my friend and fellow photographer Dan Carr.
That's a lot of different hats to wear, but it's all in service of putting the spotlight on incredible people, businesses and technologies that make this world a better place!
