The wooden grain elevator played a crucial role in the early days of industrial agriculture in North America. These sentinels served as the social and economic hub of hundreds of communities, and grew to become iconic symbols of the prairies. Over the decades, these structures have faded from the landscape, becoming replaced by larger, concrete elevators and inland terminals.
